A public demand for repairs on buggies and wagons led Fred Schoening to establish his blacksmith shop at 7880 Lincoln Avenue. A 1914 invoice to Dr. A. Louise Klehm lists 17 material and labor charges for $28.05. The daughter of one of Skokie’s leading families, she served as Skokie’s first female physician. A horseshoe in the sidewalk in front of the shop marks its history and purpose.

ADAM HARRER HOUSE

A brick home at 5309 Oakton Street belonged to Skokie’s first mayor, Adam Harrer, who also served as the fire chief. The original structure, elaborate for its time, had two fireplaces and two parlors, four bedrooms, four bathrooms, and a garden apartment. While it went through several renovations over the years, it currently resembles its appearance in 1908.

SKOKIE HERITAGE MUSEUM

A window into the past at the Historic Fire Engine House reveals the equipment that helped volunteers keep the city safe. The structure at 8031 Floral Avenue provides a home for Skokie’s Heritage Museum and Historical Society.
