The Wonderful World of Volbella
By: Hannah Heimdal
In a world where “lip filler” is most commonly associated with Kylie Jenner and the Kardashian clan, there is a great deal of misconception about lip injections and their multifaceted benefits. While most associate filler with adding volume, there are numerous benefits in addition to increasing overall size, including restoring age-related volume loss, defining lip borders and improving fine lines and wrinkles in the surrounding area. These results can all be achieved with Volbella, a hyaluronic acid filler in the Juvéderm collection. Hyaluronic acid, a natural substance in the skin, is commonly found in skincare products to deliver nutrients, enhance hydration and softness, and help bind water to the skin.
Derick Dermatology’s own Cosmetic Medical Assistant, Nicolette Jankowski, assists with Juvéderm injections at the Arlington Heights location. One of patients’ most frequently asked questions is whether their skin will sag, stretch, or appear deflated after the filler dissolves. She replies that fillers are proven to have the opposite effect: “Volbella stimulates the production of your own collagen, which can give an even longer lasting result.” Volbella is the first and only FDA-approved filler used to increase lip fullness and soften the appearance of vertical lip lines for up to one year. Just as its slogan highlights, Volbella is “something subtle that’s proven to last.”
A reassuring property of Volbella that comforts patients with pre-procedural anxiety is that the filler is reversible. Hyaluronidase is an injectable solution that can quickly dissolve Volbella. Important to note, however, is that not all patients are candidates for dissolution due to the risk of anaphylaxis in patients who are allergic to bee stings. Patients with an allergy to lidocaine, a numbing agent, or gram-positive bacterial proteins, all of which are found within Volbella injections are also ineligible.
There are several important factors to be taken into consideration when contemplating treatment with Volbella. The first is timing with regards to results: while most patients will see immediate results, it may take up to two weeks for filler to settle and inflammation to completely subside. Due to the nature of injections, most patients will experience swelling, but the degree of inflammation varies patient to patient. Most patients report a significant improvement in their swelling in the first 24 to 48 hours.
