Does Your Bundle of Joy Have Baby Acne?

Does Your Bundle of Joy Have Baby Acne?

While typically associated with puberty, it seems that no age is really “safe” from acne. Neonatal acne is a common occurrence, affecting about 1 in 5 newborns — some babies are even born with acne. So, what can you do about it? Read on to learn more!

Knowing Is Half the Battle

Neonatal acne is generally harmless and will clear up on its own within a couple of months. However, if your baby develops infantile acne, which appears after they’re 6 weeks old, it may be a sign of a bigger issue. If this is the case, consult your doctor to confirm that your baby’s acne is just that and not a skin infection, eczema or a rash.

Treating Your Baby’s Acne

Once you know what you’re dealing with is just acne, it’s important to handle it differently than you would your own acne. Babies have delicate, sensitive skin — which could be why they have acne and is definitely why you need to be gentle with treatments. Only use acne-specific products such as ointments or acne wash if your doctor recommends it. Never use astringent or exfoliating products on your baby’s skin. Avoid oily or greasy products and always use lukewarm water for washing rather than hot.

Typically, neonatal acne will disappear on its own, but if you have concerns, consult your dermatologist for the appropriate course of action. We have convenient dermatology locations near you!
