It depends. “If you’re using basic skin care — moisturizers, SPFs, cleansers — it’s fine to mix and match,” says Chicago dermatologist Amy Derick. “But if you introduce active ingredients, such as retinoids or alphahydroxy acids, and you’re not seeing a dermatologist, stay within one line, as some ingredients can counteract the effects of others. For example, benzoyl peroxide can neutralize retinol, so your skin won’t reap its benefits.”
