Do you have Rosacea?

By:

Do you have Rosacea?   Quite common, this skin disease has many different signs and symptoms.   It might affect your forehead, nose, cheeks, or chin.  Seeking medical treatment so that your skin can be evaluated by a physician is the first step to addressing your concerns about Rosacea.

Laser treatments such as V Beam (pulsed dye Laser) can help Rosacea sufferers by decreasing flushing and overall redness.  More than one treatment is necessary and staying committed is only going to help with your level of satisfaction.  Derick Dermatology offers this type of laser treatment and a consultation appointment can be scheduled for you by calling the office.

When applying sunscreen, make sure it is a physical sunscreen (one that contains zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) instead of a chemical sunscreen.    The reason for this is because chemical sunscreens can cause heat in the skin leading to flare ups.  SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense is a great choice because it has a slight tint which can help neutralize any redness or splotchy skin.

I put together a short list of tried and true products to address other concerns with redness and irritation:

Colorescience Skin Brightener – Combination tinted moisturizer and treatment cream, the slight yellow tint helps to calm redness while SPF 20 protects against sun damage.  It contains soothing ingredients like Tea Tree and Lavender and has a pleasant non-overpowering scent.

Skin PhD Cleansing Lotion – This gentle cleanser also removes makeup.   It contains Prickly Ash Bark (a natural plant extract that assists in skin healing and pain relief) and Allantoin which is often used for its healing, moisturizing and anti-irritating properties.

Stila One Step Correct – If you use a primer under your foundation consider this one as it has the ability to color correct, brighten, prime and nourish the skin with one easy application.

Additional tips that may help:

  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol and stress.
  • Keep a log or journal of symptoms.  This might help evaluate any patterns associated with flare ups!

I have a friend who suffers from Rosacea and she makes it a habit to visit her dermatologist regularly to address her concerns.  Additionally, she believes her monthly facials with a licensed esthetician keep her on track with at home maintenance including: cleansing, moisturizing and awareness of how stress, caffeine and lack of sleep impact her skin health.
