Good for Your Scalp, Bad for Your Hair

By: Laura Hunnewell

How often should you wash your hair? Some stylists recommend washing your hair not more than 2 times per week. I don’t know about you, but I work out a lot and when you get really sweaty at the gym washing your hair is pretty much a necessity! I have been trying to limit the amount of washings as I color my hair and the ends get pretty dry. Try using a scarf or sweatband on the days you want to skip a hair washing when you work out.

Dry shampoos are a great oily scalp remedy and provide odor protection and thickening. I love Rene Furturer dry shampoo as it combines clay into the formula, which helps to absorb scalp oil. Wearing your hair in a braid or styled up in bun is a great option for the in between days when you don’t wash but still want a cute style for work.

If you have an oily scalp, frequent washing is beneficial. Keeping the scalp exfoliated and clean helps to promote healthy hair growth. If you have a drier scalp, you might benefit from skipping a day or 2 and using a dry shampoo instead. If you have a flaky or itchy scalp, shampooing a bit more may help to loosen the flakes and keep the scalp balanced.

Factors that might dry out your hair can also include heat styling (blow drying and use of flat iron), swimming and being out in the sun.

Kerastase Densitive GL is a non rinse spray which contains naturally exfoliating lactic acid. I have found it really revives flat hair, adds texture and can be used on either wet or dry hair. Get it here.

Restorsea makes a revitalizing scalp treatment which promotes open and healthy follicles and is paraben, silicone and phthalate free. It is also great option for sensitive skin.

A clean scalp is healthy scalp. It’s a personal preference in the end.
