Tried and true, intralesional Kenalog injections have played an important role in the world of dermatology since their introduction in 1961. Intralesional Kenalog injections, or ILK injections, help reduce and suppress inflammation to an area of skin through the injection of steroid, through a fine needle. Kenalog, or triamcinolone acetonide, reduces inflammation in cystic acne, flattens scar tissue in keloids or hypertrophic scarring, as well as increases hair growth in alopecia areata. So what is the advantage of injecting a steroid rather than applying it topically or taking it orally? While a topical steroid is applied on the most superficial layer of skin and works its way down through the layers of skin, injected steroids bypass the superficial layers of skin to work at a deeper layer. Along with the advantage of medicating closer to the source of inflammation, ILK injections also concentrate on a selective area of the body. Concentrated focus allows for fewer systemic side effects often experienced in taking oral steroids.
ILK injections are offered at each of our locations in Arlington Heights, Barrington, Crystal Lake, and Elgin. The procedure itself takes no more than ten minutes, is easily performed, and is a relatively safe treatment option. The aftercare of ILK injections is straightforward. We advise that you keep the bandage on for a period of 24 hours, but otherwise no further action is needed. In regards to acne, symptomatic relief can be seen as soon as 24 hours, with an effective injection flattening the lesions within two to three days.
Although considered a safe procedure, there are still risks associated with intralesional Kenalog injections. Risks include the potential for divots to form in the area of the skin that has been injected, as well as loss of pigment of the area.
