These Are a Few of Our Favorite Things

SPF

The reason we choose the specific SPF products that we have at our practice is for one magic ingredient: zinc oxide. When it comes to the chemical SPF vs. physical SPF battle, physical is always better. This is because it contains zinc oxide, something OTC chemical SPF usually doesn’t offer. This ingredient is what you see in old movies- people with white noses from covering themselves in zinc oxide. These days they have made it much more attractive. Zinc oxide has the broadest spectrum UVA and UVB reflectors approved by the FDA. It is also water insoluble- perfect for the beach or pool!

Zinc oxide is hard to find in OTC products. Two good OTC choices containing this key ingredient are Neutrogena Baby sunblock or Pure & Free. Our sunblock at Derick Dermatology always has zinc oxide to ensure maximum UVA/UVB protection. Skinceuticals’ Sheer Physical UV Defense has zinc oxide nanoparticles so skin does not appear white or “chalky” looking! The key is to reapply every hour and use at least an SPF of 30.

Day Cream
Neocutis’s Journee Day Cream is a favorite among the patients and staff at Derick Dermatology. This has two chemical sunscreens in it, and with PSP (Processed Skin Cell Proteins) present, Journee promotes anti-aging skin-revitalization. It fights against redness in skin because of the green tea, as well. There is also an SPF of 30 (bonus!). If you’re going to splurge on one product, make it one with an SPF!

Facial Cleanser

Older skin: We recommend generally two different products containing glycolic acid- Vivite Daily Facial Cleanser and Vivite Exfoliating Facial Cleanser. The microbeads and added salicylic acid in the exfoliating wash help to get rid of dead skin cells and maintain glowing, luminous skin.
Acne-prone skin: One of the best products for patients with acne products is something with salicylic acid. Vivite Exfoliating Facial Cleanser, as mentioned above, is great because it contains the microbeads and salicylic acid. We also recommend OTC Neutrogena oil-free Acne Wash because of the acne-fighting salicylic acid and the non-comedogenic properties that won’t clog pores.

Sensitive skin: For patients with this skin type, we recommend a routine that includes washing your face once a day with a salicylic acid cleanser and once a day with a gentle cleanser. CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser is great for dry skin, and their Foaming Facial Cleanser is suited for those with oily skin. Cetaphil also makes a gentle cleanser. These products can all be bought OTC.

Moisturizer

For most patients we recommend a few OTC facial and body moisturizers. For face, CeraVe PM is great for all skin types, but especially with retinoid usage. This is because it is least irritating. For body, CeraVe Moisturizing Cream and Cetaphil Hydrating Lotion are recommended.

We have some great high-end, anti-aging creams with moisturizing properties at Derick Dermatology like the aforementioned Journee Day Cream. We also recommend Vivite Replenish Hydrating Cream for patients with sensitive or post-procedure skin. Vivite’s Night Renewal Facial Cream is also great, but can be more irritating to sensitive skin because it has glycolic acid in it.
