How to Check Moles – When to get a Mole Checked – The ABCDEs of mole checking

By: Jessica Meyer

It only takes a few minutes to give your entire body a once over to check for new or changing moles. Familiarizing yourself with your body is so important, because it could potentially save your life! Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer, but it is detectable if you stay vigilant.

Here are the ABCDEs of what to look for:

“A” stands for “Asymmetry.” Look to see if moles are completely round, or symmetric. You should be able to draw a line through the middle and it will be the same on both sides. An asymmetrical mole is cause for suspicion.

“B” stands for “Border.” Any border irregularities in moles are suspicious. Look for moles that have jagged or ill-defined borders.

“C” stands for “Color.” Normal moles are one color. Look for different pigments in the same mole, or the darkening and lightening of moles over time.

“D” stands for “Diameter.” The rule is to look for moles larger than a pencil eraser, or 6 mm. These should be examined by a provider regardless of other abnormalities mentioned. Malignant melanoma can absolutely be smaller than 6 mm in diameter, too, so don’t disregard those smaller moles.

“E” stands for “Evolving.” Look for moles that change over time in size, shape, or color. This evolution can happen quickly or slowly, but it’s important to track. Also note moles that are different from the rest.

Make sure to track these moles with the ABCDEs and tell your dermatological provider at your next skin exam. Things are always changing and evolving with time and sun exposure, making it even more important to get yearly skin exams from a board-certified dermatologist.
