Redheads and Skin Cancer

Titian, ginger, auburn, amber, russet, or copper – all are words used to describe redheads. Only one to two percent of the world’s population have red hair; as the rarest natural hair color, many covet it. However a recent study suggests that maybe they shouldn’t.

Red hair is often associated with fair, freckled skin that tends to burn quickly when exposed to ultraviolet light, so it comes as no surprise that it is also associated with skin cancer. Researchers at Britain’s Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, however, discovered that this is partially related to a gene. The study analyzed cells collected from 400 people with cancer. Through this, it was learned that of the sample group, those who carried the “redhead” gene were 42% more likely to have sun-related mutations in their cancer cells. While there is more to be learned, the study suggests that the propensity of redheads to skin cancer isn’t only related to UV exposure. While genetics are beyond their control, there are still precautions that redheads should take to protect their skin.

While you might envy the tresses of Julianne Moore, Emma Stone, or Prince Harry, their freckle-dusted skin may not be so enviable. It is undeniable that redheads need to be more diligent about incorporating sunscreen in their everyday skincare routine than those with darker pigmentation. They may need to take additional precautions, as well: avoiding sun exposure during the peak hours of 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM and wearing UV-resistant clothing may also protect that delicate, fair skin. And as always, regular visits to a dermatologist are necessary to track slight changes in their skin that only a skilled practitioner can detect.
