Snow Skiers- Protect Your Skin!

Snow Skiers- Protect Your Skin!
Hannah Caroompas

Whether we like it or not, it is nearing that time of year where freezing temperatures, high winds, and snow rule our lives. For outdoor snow sports enthusiasts, this means it is almost time to start gearing up! While you are making sure all your equipment is ready for this season, why not also ensure that your knowledge on skin protection is up to par?

Being out in cold and snowy conditions can take its toll on anyone’s skin. It is natural to bundle up and cover one’s skin to stay warm, but there is more to protecting your skin than just warm clothing. Did you know that even in the winter time, it is important to protect from the sun’s UV rays? Most people think sunscreen is only for the summer months, but if any of your skin is exposed in the winter (especially the face), sunscreen is still a must! Sunscreen of 30SPF or higher is recommended for skiers because the ice and snow actually reflect the harmful UV rays back into the air.

Another factor to consider is the dryness that accompanies the cold. This is especially crucial for those who already suffer from dry skin or Rosacea. Skiers spend long hours outside in high winds and cold dry air. Combine this with the fact that most homes and buildings a skier will retreat to maintain high temperatures which dries the air even more, and you’ve got itchy, dry skin. It is important to moisturize diligently and consider using a humidifier at home. Our providers often recommend Cerave, some of which are available within our dispensary at each office.

The drying effects of skiing can be especially menacing for those with Rosacea. Rosacea is a skin disorder that often causes unsightly redness, pimples and flushing predominately on the nose, cheeks and forehead. When this already irritated skin is exposed to the cold, conditions can flare up and become more painful. If your regular cleansing and moisturizing routine is not helping your skin improve, it may be time to schedule an appointment with one of our providers. They will be able to advise you on how to clean and hydrate your skin while also treating your Rosacea with the right medications. You may even be able to better enjoy your time skiing with your skin condition under control!
