Did you know that it takes only 15 minutes for the ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun to damage your skin? However, you don’t have to completely avoid fun in the sun to protect your skin. We want you to have a safe and happy summer, so we have some important sun protection suggestions to share with you.
The sun’s rays are strongest from 10 am to 4 pm. Avoid damaging rays from the sun by staying in the shade when outdoors. A beach umbrella provides instant shade and protection for your skin plus providing a cooler place to relax.
The sun’s rays can damage your skin even on cloudy or cool days. While you are outside you should apply sunscreen every 2 hours and after swimming or sweating. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 protection.
A wide-brimmed hat will help protect your face and neck and keep you cooler.
The Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) blocks out the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays when added to clothing. A UPF of 40 to 50 blocks about 98% of the sun’s rays. Choose loose-fitting UPF clothing for the best protection.
Dark, thick clothing lets in less of the sun’s rays compared to clothing made of thinner, lighter colored fabrics. Stay hydrated when wearing heavier clothing and don’t stay out too long to avoid becoming overheated.
Tanning beds produce UVA and UVB rays and can cause more damage to your skin than the sun. These harmful rays increase the risk for skin cancer including melanoma — the deadliest form of skin cancer. Using tanning beds also increases the chance of developing cataracts and ocular melanoma.
Some medications can increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight. Be sure to check with your pharmacist if you are unsure about any medication and its effect on your skin in sunlight.
Check for changes to freckles, moles, or birthmarks and look for new changes in your skin. (A mirror can help you to see out-of-the-way areas).
Many people neglect one of the most important details during the summer – sun protection. Don’t let the sun age your skin with sunspots, wrinkles and, in some cases, skin cancer!
