You’re probably aware that the outside elements are damaging to your body’s largest organ. You’ve tried your best to stay out of tanning beds, wear a hat or cover-up, and at least wear makeup with SPF in it. Even with all of these precautions the signs of aging are there. Aging is going to happen, embrace it! We have a few simple ways to ease into it:
Step one, wash your face twice a day! And use the appropriate cleanser for your skin type. This is a great way to prevent clogged pores and improve skin texture. This especially means washing makeup off before bed. I know, I know. You’re tired, you want to fall asleep, but your face will thank you when you wake up.
Step two, start using a good moisturizer. There are many options, drugstore and high-end, that will maintain the barrier between your skin and the harsh winter air. Keep on reading!
Step three, start using a retinoid. A retinoid (like retinol, retinal, or tretinoin) helps to regenerate skin cells faster. This is because retinoids are a close chemical derivative of Vitamin A. Little, acne-like bumps will shrink, along with the improvement of fine lines. Your skin will feel dewy and radiant. Important: ease your skin into this product by applying every other night, or using a fragrance-free, gentle moisturizer (like CeraVe PM) before applying the retinoid.
Step four, use an SPF. This should be done as your last and most important step. Prevention in UVA/UVB protection is vital. SPF comes in powder form as well, so you don’t have to ruin your makeup!
Another important part of your skin care routine is getting a full-body check, especially if you are fair-skinned, light-eyed, or fair-haired. With the dramatic increase in skin cancer rates, especially in young people, we recommend patients get them once a year, depending on their personal and family skin cancer history. Refer to the ABCDE’s of mole-checking. If anything changes you should make note and point it out to your dermatological provider. Don’t forget- your skin care routine is not just for your face!
